01 Information We Collect
ExamBuddy does not require you to create an account, so we do not collect names, email addresses, or other identity information through the app itself.
A. Information you provide directly
Under normal use of the app, you are not asked to provide personal information. If you choose to contact us by email for support, we will receive whatever information you include in that message (for example, your email address and message content).
B. Information generated automatically
When the app communicates with our backend to fetch academic content, standard technical information is exchanged as part of any app-to-server request (such as request timestamps and basic device/network information needed to deliver a response). This is not linked to a personal account, since ExamBuddy does not have one.
C. Information stored locally on your device
The app stores certain data locally on your device, including previously fetched academic content (for offline access) and, where notifications are enabled, information needed to deliver notifications to your device. See Offline Storage and Caching and Notifications for details.
02 How We Use Information
We use the limited information described above only to operate the app, specifically to:
- Retrieve and display academic content you request (syllabus, course units, PYQs, and related material)
- Allow previously downloaded content to remain viewable when you're offline
- Deliver notifications you have not disabled
- Respond to support requests sent directly to us by email
We do not use this information for advertising, and we do not sell information to third parties.
03 Account and Authentication
ExamBuddy does not require an account. You can use the app's academic content features without registering, logging in, or providing personal credentials of any kind.
04 Academic Content
Syllabus information, course units and topics, Previous Year Questions (PYQs), and related academic documents are retrieved from ExamBuddy's backend when you browse or search within the app. The availability, accuracy, and completeness of this content depends on what has been published to our backend database and may change over time.
This content is added and maintained by ExamBuddy administrators — it is not user-generated, and browsing it does not require you to submit personal information.
05 Offline Storage and Caching
To reduce repeated network requests and improve loading speed, ExamBuddy stores a local copy of academic content you've already opened, using on-device storage (AsyncStorage). This lets previously viewed syllabus, PYQ, and course content remain available even without an internet connection.
Content stored this way stays on your device — opening cached content again does not necessarily send a new request to our backend. This local cache can be cleared at any time by clearing the app's storage/cache in your device's app settings, or by uninstalling the app.
06 Notifications
ExamBuddy can send you notifications, for example about new or updated academic content. To deliver notifications, the app stores a device-level notification identifier associated with your device installation — this identifier is not linked to your name, email, or any personal profile, since ExamBuddy has no account system.
Notifications are based on general content updates, not on tracking your individual behaviour within the app. You can disable notifications at any time from your device's notification settings for ExamBuddy.
07 Backend and Third-Party Services
ExamBuddy's mobile app communicates with our backend API, hosted on Render, to retrieve academic content. Our backend uses Supabase for database and backend infrastructure, which stores the academic content served to the app (such as syllabus entries, course units, and PYQs).
Two additional services are used, but only on the administrator side when ExamBuddy staff add or update content — neither one receives data submitted by app users:
| Service | Purpose | Data involved | Privacy policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Backend database and infrastructure for storing and serving academic content | Academic content records (syllabus, units, PYQs); no user account data, since none is collected | supabase.com/privacy |
| Render | Hosting for the ExamBuddy backend API | Standard server request handling for API calls made by the app | render.com/privacy |
| Google Gemini API | Used by ExamBuddy administrators, on the admin side only, to extract text from academic documents when preparing content | Document/content text handled by admins during content creation — not data submitted by app users | ai.google.dev privacy & terms |
| Cloudinary | Used by ExamBuddy administrators, on the admin side only, to upload and host PDF/academic documents | PDF/document files uploaded by admins — not files submitted by app users | cloudinary.com/privacy |
We do not use advertising SDKs, analytics-for-advertising services, or location, contacts, camera, or microphone permissions in ExamBuddy.
08 Data Storage and Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information handled by ExamBuddy's backend and infrastructure providers. No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, so while we work to protect information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
09 Data Retention
- Server-side academic content (in Supabase): retained for as long as needed to operate the app and provide up-to-date academic material.
- Account/authentication data: not applicable — ExamBuddy does not have user accounts.
- Locally cached data on your device: retained until you clear the app's cache/storage or uninstall the app.
- Notification identifiers: retained for as long as notifications remain enabled on your device, and removed when you disable notifications or uninstall the app.
10 Data Deletion
Because ExamBuddy has no accounts, there is no account to delete. You can remove locally cached content at any time by clearing the app's storage in your device settings or by uninstalling the app, which also removes your device's notification identifier from active use.
If you have any other question or request related to data handled by ExamBuddy, you can reach us using the contact details below and we will address it directly.
11 Children's Privacy
ExamBuddy is an academic reference app intended for students. Because the app does not collect names, contact details, or other identifying account information, it does not knowingly collect personal information from children. We have not verified formal compliance with children's privacy frameworks such as COPPA, and we do not make that claim here.
12 User Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights relating to information about you, such as asking what information is held or requesting it be corrected or removed. Since ExamBuddy does not collect personal account information within the app, most such requests will relate to locally cached content (which you control directly on your device) or to any email correspondence you've sent us. Contact us with any request and we will do our best to help.
13 Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the app evolves. When we do, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
